Mark 4:37-39

Mark 4:37-39: “37 And a great windstorm arose, and the waves were breaking into the boat, so that the boat was already filling. 38 But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion. And they woke him and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?” 39 And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.”

Storms in life will always come. Although God is sovereign over them, the wrong response is to accuse Him of not caring. He cares! He is working through the storms of your life for your good and His glory. It’s one of the ways He shapes us into the image of Christ. The more we press into the Lord during the storm, the more peace we experience in the midst of it. We simply need to trust Him.

Several of Jesus’ disciples were seasoned fishermen. They knew the waters of the Sea of Galilee and what they were capable of. So it was no surprise when a storm suddenly arose, but this one was perhaps more violent than any they had experienced before. Their open bowed boat was filling with water, and the disciples were terrified. The only One in the boat who could calm the storm was asleep. They woke Jesus with an accusation: “Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?” Jesus rebuked the wind and the sea, bringing about a great calm. Then He turned to His disciples and lovingly rebuked them for their lack of faith. The problem was not the size of the storm but the smallness of their trust in the Savior who was with them.

When the storms come into your life, how do you respond? Are you fearful and accusatory, or do you trust that God has sovereignly allowed this trial and is working through it for your good? Regardless of how fierce the storm becomes, the Christian’s response should remain the same. We are called to walk by faith, trusting that God is accomplishing His perfect purposes. The enemy will tempt you to question God’s goodness and accuse Him of not caring. Don’t believe the lie. Walk by faith, rest in His peace, and watch Him work on your behalf. Amen?

Father, You are sovereign over all things. Help us to trust You when the storms of life hit us unexpectedly. Remind us that You are with us, You care for us, and You are working all things together for our good and Your glory. You are our peace and our strength. Help us to rest in You as we wait for You to calm the storm in Your perfect timing. We ask this in Jesus’ name, amen.
