Mark 6:47-48;52

Mark 6:47-48;52: “47 And when evening came, the boat was out on the sea, and he was alone on the land. 48 And he saw that they were making headway painfully, for the wind was against them. And about the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea. He meant to pass by them…52 for they did not understand about the loaves, but their hearts were hardened.”

Nothing can soften a hardened heart like adversity that God sovereignly uses. The Lord cares too much about us to leave us in such a detrimental spiritual condition.

After miraculously feeding five thousand men with five loaves and two fish, Jesus sent His disciples ahead by boat to the other side of the sea while He remained behind to pray. From the mountain He saw them straining at the oars because the wind was against them. During the fourth watch of the night (between 3:00 and 6:00 a.m.), Jesus came to them walking on the sea. Mark tells us that He intended to pass by them—a divine revelation of His glory—but the disciples cried out in fear because they thought He was a ghost. Immediately Jesus said, “Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid.” He climbed into the boat, and the wind ceased. Through this trial, Jesus was exposing the hardness of their hearts and teaching them to trust Him more fully.

Have you ever felt like you were rowing against a contrary wind? Believe it or not, God uses a strong headwind to shape us. Sometimes He uses it to expose and soften a hard heart. Other times He uses it to deepen our faith and conform us to the image of Christ. Whatever the reason, don’t stop rowing. The Savior sees you, He is praying for you, and He will come to you at exactly the right time. Whether He calms the storm or strengthens you to endure it, you can trust His perfect care. Keep your heart soft and your eyes fixed on Him.

Father, give us strength to keep rowing when the winds of life blow against us. Use every trial to soften our hearts, deepen our faith, and make us more like Christ. Help us to trust that You see us, You are with us, and Your purposes are always good. Your will be done. In Jesus’ name, amen.
