Matthew 16:6-8 (ESV): “6 Jesus said to them, “Watch and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” 7 And they began discussing it among themselves, saying, “We brought no bread.” 8 But Jesus, aware of this, said, “O you of little faith, why are you discussing among yourselves the fact that you have no bread?”
When Jesus speaks, there is always the possibility that we will miss His point and apply it to something lesser. Ask the Spirit to lead you into all truth so you don’t miss the principle!
After confronting the Pharisees and Sadducees, Jesus warned His disciples about their teaching and practices. The disciples had forgotten to bring bread on their journey, so they assumed Jesus was speaking about that. They missed the greater point by focusing on the material. Jesus rebuked them for not remembering His miracles of multiplying bread and fish! His warning was not about physical provisions but about the corrupting influence of false teaching and unbelief.
How can we avoid falling into the same trap? Keeping God’s Word in context is key. Not allowing our own preconceived ideas to get in the way is also important. Most importantly, we must allow the Spirit to lead us in our understanding. He will guard us from becoming distracted by lesser things and help us discern the deeper spiritual truths God is communicating. Jesus spoke so as not to be misunderstood. We should listen with the same heart. The Spirit will help us do that. Amen?
Father, keep our hearts focused on the bigger picture of eternity. May we hear what You are communicating in Your Word so that we do not miss the spiritual truths You desire to teach us. Guard us from unbelief and worldly distractions, and help us walk in discernment and faith, in Jesus’ name, amen.
