Matthew 23:11-12

Matthew 23:11-12 (ESV): “11 The greatest among you shall be your servant. 12 Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.”

God loves humility. Those who lack it are in for a rude awakening. Those who have it will be exalted. It is the pathway to greatness in the Kingdom, so stay humble!

Jesus reminds His disciples not only to avoid the works of the scribes and Pharisees, but also their tendency to exalt themselves. These men strove to appear righteous before others through religious practices. They also sought the best seats in the synagogues. But what they cherished most was being called “Rabbi” in the marketplace. They desired to be exalted before the wrong audience!

Are you living to exalt yourself or Christ? Exalt Christ and remain humble, and you will be exalted. Exalt yourself, and you will be humbled. Be careful with your heart, Christian, for it will crave the praise of man. Those temporary accolades will ultimately be to your detriment. The only audience you should care about is not of this world. Live for the Lord—it will prove far more beneficial in the long run!

Father, forgive us for exalting ourselves at times. Keep us humble, that we might live at Your feet all the days of our lives. We pray this in Jesus' name, amen.
