Matthew 26:26-28

Matthew 26:26-28 (ESV):26 Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is my body.” 27 And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, “Drink of it, all of you, 28 for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.”

Communion with God is not a metaphysical union but a spiritual reminder of what God has done through His Son. We eat and drink in remembrance of Him.

Just before Jesus was betrayed, He instituted the Lord’s Supper. It was during the Passover meal that He did this because that meal foreshadowed what Jesus would do for us. The Passover meal pointed forward to Christ and His redemptive work. He is the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. He first took the bread, blessed it, broke it, and then gave it to His disciples, saying, “Take, eat; this is My body.” Then He took the cup, blessed it, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink of it, all of you, for this is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.”

When you partake of communion, are you remembering what Jesus has done for you personally? It is not a time to flippantly eat or drink; it is a time to reflect on and remember what the Lord has done for you. We are reminded not to partake of it in an unworthy manner (1 Cor. 11:27). Come to the table with a repentant heart, reverence, and gratitude, remembering the price that was paid for you. In so doing, you proclaim His death until He comes (1 Cor. 11:26).

Father, thank You for instituting the New Covenant ordinance of Communion. Help us to partake with repentant hearts, reverence, and gratitude as we remember the sacrifice of Your Son, whose body was broken and whose blood was shed for our salvation we pray, in Jesus name, amen.
