Matthew 6:24

Matthew 6:24 (ESV): “No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.”

Money is a tangible object that is amoral in character. It can be used for good or for evil, depending on how it is handled. But one thing it should never be is your god—only Yahweh deserves that place in your life.

Jesus reminds His disciples that they cannot have two masters. It is impossible to serve both. You may deceive yourself into thinking you are serving both God and money, but in the end, you are only serving one—and it will not be God if money has your heart. God will not compete for the throne of your heart. He is either Lord of all or not Lord at all. The love of money is a root of all kinds of evil because it becomes an idol that can never deliver what it promises. Keep Christ on the throne as Lord of your life.

How do you know if money has become your god? That is a question many try to avoid with excuses. “Money isn’t my god,” they say, “but you do need it to survive.” That’s true—but if obtaining money becomes the central focus of your life, then it has taken its place on the throne of your heart. And it makes a terrible god. It will leave you constantly craving just a little more, and before you know it, you’ve wasted your life pursuing temporary wealth. Keep money in its proper place. It should never be your god.

Father, forgive us for attempting to serve two masters. You are the only One we desire. Remove any idol from our lives and take Your rightful place on the throne of our hearts. We pray this in Jesus’ name, amen.
