Psalm 119:171-172

Writer: Tim RomeroTim Romero

Psalm 119:171–172 (ESV): “171  My lips will pour forth praise, for you teach me your statutes. 172  My tongue will sing of your word, for all your commandments are right.”

Your perception of the Bible matters because it reflects how you view God. If you believe His Word is a safety net to keep you from falling, then you see God as a loving Father. If you believe it consists merely of rules designed to ruin your fun, then you see God as a dictator. Your view of His Word matters.

For 171 verses, the psalmist has been declaring his love for the Word of God. Although he struggles to live up to it, he knows that God’s Word is good and beneficial. His ultimate conclusion is that the rule-maker is a good and loving Father who cares for his soul. Therefore, he praises God for teaching him and sings of His statutes, knowing they come from a good God.

How do you view God’s Word? Does it make you want to praise Him or curse Him? Is your heart glad for His statutes, or do you desire to live without them? The answer to these questions ultimately reveals your perception of God. The enemy wants you to see God as a narcissistic and self-absorbed dictator, but God wants you to see Him as a loving Father who protects you from harm.

What say you, friend? May you come to the same conclusion as the psalmist and praise Him for giving us His Word. Amen?

Father, we thank You for being a good and loving Father to us. Teach us to walk in Your ways through Your Word. May we cherish every word, knowing it is for our good. We pray in Jesus’ name, amen.
