Luke 1:20

Luke 1:20: “And behold, you will be silent and unable to speak until the day that these things take place, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their time.””

Trusting God at His Word is where joy and contentment come from. Sadly, when we walk in unbelief, it doesn’t necessarily rob us of the blessing God has given us, but it does rob us of the enjoyment of it.

Zechariah and Elizabeth were a righteous couple that God had chosen to use as vessels to bring the forerunner, John the Baptist, into the world. Gabriel was sent to Zechariah while he was in the temple to deliver the good news. However, because of their age and the fact that Elizabeth was barren, Zechariah didn’t believe it. His unbelief wouldn’t stop God from using them, but it would leave him mute until John was born. He was unable to speak and rejoice in this blessing because he didn’t believe.

How often do we do the same thing? God gives us a promise, and because of our circumstances, we have a hard time believing. The promise doesn’t change, but our ability to enjoy it will. When we allow our circumstances to become bigger than God, He will still accomplish His purposes, but our unbelief can rob us of the blessing of rejoicing and sharing in what He is doing. As the old song says, “Trust and obey, for there’s no other way, to be happy in Jesus, than to trust and obey.” Amen?

Father, we glory in Your goodness this day. Fill us with faith that we might trust You in all things. Let not unbelief rob us of our ability to enjoy Your blessings, we pray in Jesus’ name, amen.
