Malachi 3:10 (ESV): “Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need.”
God is a generous God, and He desires to be represented that way. When His children are tight-fisted with their offerings, they miss a huge opportunity to be blessed. Try Him and see.
The people of Judah had ceased bringing their tithes and offerings to the Temple, and as a result, God’s house was suffering. The tithe was a law, not a suggestion (Deut. 14:28–29). If a person failed to bring their tithes, they were penalized and required to add one-fifth more to make up for it (Lev. 27:31–32). What these people failed to realize is that in their effort to take care of themselves, they were actually missing out on a greater blessing.
What is your mindset when it comes to giving to God? The New Testament makes it clear that we are not under the Law as it relates to giving, but we are called to give according to what we have decided in our hearts (2 Cor. 9:7). Paul adds, “God loves a cheerful giver.” Don’t forget—our financial resources are a matter of stewardship. All that we have is His. He is asking us to be faithful, and if we are, He will bless. Amen?
Father, we thank You that You have entrusted us with the resources we have. Help us to steward them wisely and to be generous, as You are generous to us. In Jesus’ name we pray, amen.
