Matthew 18:2-4 (ESV): “2 And calling to him a child, he put him in the midst of them 3 and said, “Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. 4 Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.”
Greatness in the Kingdom of God has nothing to do with earthly influence, but with your faith. It turns out that your dependence on Jesus will be the true measure of your greatness in His Kingdom.
The disciples came to Jesus with a question. They wanted to know which of them was the greatest in His Kingdom. First off, that is a wild thing to ask, but nevertheless Jesus indulged them. He called a child to the center of the conversation and said, “If you want to be great, you must become like this child,” who is totally dependent upon his parents to care for him, which produces humility. Jesus went on to say, “This is how you become great in the Kingdom.”
Where do you see yourself in the Kingdom? Most of us have the idea that we will be in the lower third of the class because we are using an earthly matrix to measure. It will surprise many of us who will be considered great! Because it’s not about the magnitude of your witness in this life, but your dependence upon and faithfulness to Christ. If you want to be great, become like a child. Amen?
Father, make us like little children, dependent and obedient to Your voice. May we fulfill the things You have created us to do and not get distracted trying to make a name for ourselves. We pray this in Jesus’ name, amen.
