Matthew 27:17-19

Matthew 27:17-19 (ESV):17 So when they had gathered, Pilate said to them, “Whom do you want me to release for you••: Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?” 18 For he knew that it was out of envy that they had delivered him up. 19 Besides, while he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent word to him•, “Have nothing to do with that righteous man, for I have suffered much because of him today in a dream.””

Warnings from God should be taken seriously. He gives them for the purpose of helping us avoid sin, danger, and the painful consequences of disobedience.

Pilate knew Jesus was innocent. He could perceive that the religious leaders had handed Jesus over because of envy, and yet they still wanted Him condemned. Since it was customary for a prisoner to be released during the feast, Pilate brought out Barabbas, a notorious prisoner who was guilty of robbery, murder, and insurrection, and asked the crowd whether they wanted him to release Jesus or Barabbas. The crowd chose Barabbas.

Meanwhile, Pilate received a warning from God through his wife. She told him, “Have nothing to do with that righteous man,” because she had suffered much in a dream because of Him. But Pilate did not heed the warning. Instead, he gave in to the pressure of the crowd and delivered Jesus over to be crucified.

How do you respond to the warnings God gives you? Sometimes God warns us through His Word. Other times, He may use godly counsel, conviction in our hearts, circumstances, or even providential interruptions to get our attention. One thing is certain: there is no shortage of warnings from God. We should heed His warnings, lest we find ourselves suffering the consequences of ignoring His voice. Be found yielding to the voice of God. Amen?

Father, we thank You for the warnings You graciously provide for us. You know what is best, so help us yield to Your voice. We pray this in Jesus’ name, amen.
