Psalm 1:1-2

Psalm 1:1–2 (ESV): “Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night.”

The blessed life is found in living for the Lord. The Word of God is the means to this blessedness. Those who delight in and meditate on it will be blessed.

The book of Psalms is the longest book in the Bible. The title Psalms means “songs of praise.” It mirrors the Pentateuch (the first five books of the Bible) in that it is divided into five sections. Psalms 1 and 2 serve as an introduction. The Psalms begin with an appropriate exhortation to live a blessed life, observed through delighting in and meditating on the Word of God.

What counsel do you walk in? What path do you follow? Where do you sit? If you aren’t delighting in and meditating on the Word, you will find yourself walking in the counsel of the wicked, standing in the way of sinners, and sitting in the seat of scoffers. It’s a progressive transition from bad to worse.  Be blessed, Christian! Walk in the counsel of God, stand in His path, and sit in His presence. There is an upward progression found here, which is why you will be blessed. So, do it!

Father, we thank You for warning us of the not-so-blessed life. We also thank You for allowing us to experience the blessed life. Put a desire in our hearts to know You more. Give us an insatiable longing for Your Word. May it be our delight and what we meditate on day and night. We pray in Jesus’ name, amen.
