Psalm 118:8-9

Writer: Tim RomeroTim Romero

Psalm 118:8–9 (ESV): “8  It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in man. 9  It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in princes.”

Trust is essential for a life of true peace. When we rely on man, we will lack peace because man is fallible. We must trust in God alone, for He is infallible, incorruptible, and unshakable. In Him alone, we find perfect peace.

The psalmist, whom many believe to be David, proclaims that we must take refuge in God alone amid life’s trials. When we put our trust in “man” or “princes,” we are relying on unstable sources. They may have influence and power, but they cannot offer the security that only God provides. We must not trust in political leaders, financial systems, or social structures, for they shift constantly. But God remains our refuge and strength (Psalm 46:1). He alone is our source of true and lasting peace.

Where do you turn for refuge in this life? In whom do you place your trust? Pastors and church leaders? Doctors? Lawyers? Politicians? While God can use any of these people to help us, we should never take refuge in man. God is our strong tower, and the righteous run to Him and are safe. Examine yourself today—are you taking refuge in God or in man? Trust Him alone.

Father, forgive us if we have placed our trust in man rather than in You. Direct our hearts to surrender our trials to You alone. We know that You alone are our Savior. Take Your rightful place on the throne of our hearts now, we pray, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
