1 Chronicles 21:1–2 (ESV): Then Satan stood against Israel and incited David to number Israel. 2 So David said to Joab and the commanders of the army, “Go, number Israel, from Beersheba to Dan, and bring me a report, that I may know their number.”
We have an adversary who doesn’t want us to succeed in walking out the will of God. Satan will distract and tempt you to get off track. Beware of his schemes and your proclivity to pride!
After David had much success in walking out God’s will for his life, Satan crept in. The enemy knew if David would take the glory from God, that the Lord would judge him. So he tempted David to number “his” kingdom. Joab told David it wasn’t a good idea, but David wouldn’t listen and proceeded to request the people of Israel be numbered. God was displeased with this thing, and He struck Israel with a plague. Seventy thousand men died because of David's pride.
How do you respond to the temptation of pride? The enemy is so crafty, that he will make you feel responsible for the things God is doing in your life. Be quick to take that thought captive and give God the glory. He alone deserves it! When temptation comes, remember the Lord is your strong tower. Those who run to Him are safe. Don't take the bait! Be humble and give God the glory for anything good happening.
Father, we thank You for giving us the Holy Spirit, who is our protector and convictor. Help us to cling to Him when temptation comes. Protect us from the evil one we pray in Jesus' name, amen.
