Deuteronomy 30:18-19

Deuteronomy 30:18–19 (ESV): “19 I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse. Therefore choose life…”

Free will is a double-edged sword. We desire it, but it can get us into big trouble. Thankfully, God has given us a free-will navigation system called the conscious, powered by the Holy Spirit. If we choose to follow it, we will be led to the foot of the cross where life was won on our behalf. Surrendering to Jesus is how we choose life.

The Lord told the children of Israel that they are choosing life or death by how they live. They can either choose to disobey God and die or obey Him and live. The issue is a matter of law. God is a righteous judge and requires that we walk in obedience to His law. It's a choice for those who belong to Him. The ramification of disobedience is death. Thus, He says, “Choose life” by being obedient. It's the only way to live in the Old Covenant.

Aren’t you glad we have been given New Covenant? The law has been satisfied on our behalf through Jesus Christ! We are no longer governed by the taskmaster. We have been given a new heart with a new guidance system. He is the Holy Spirit and when we choose to walk in Him we will naturally fulfill the law. Life is not found in the law but in Christ alone. We choose life when we surrender to Him! Jesus is the right choice for all.

Father, we thank You for providing a way of escape from the wages of sin through Your Son. Empower us to walk in obedience to Your Spirit, not because it's how gain life but how we demonstrate that we have life we pray in Jesus' name, amen.
