Ezekiel 13:22-23 (ESV): “22 Because you have disheartened the righteous falsely, although I have not grieved him, and you have encouraged the wicked, that he should not turn from his evil way to save his life, 23 therefore you shall no more see false visions nor practice divination. I will deliver my people out of your hand. And you shall know that I am the Lord.”
False prophets and false teachers have existed since the beginning of time. They use their positions to gain prosperity and popularity, yet their ways will not go unpunished. God will deal with them swiftly and severely—it is only a matter of time.
Through Ezekiel, the Lord once again addressed the false prophets of Israel. These men were proclaiming a health, wealth, and prosperity message for Jerusalem, Judah, and even for those already in captivity. They were telling the people what they wanted to hear rather than what they needed to hear, all while claiming their words came from God. Lying is bad enough, but to falsely proclaim a message in the name of the Lord is a far greater offense. Woe to those who do such things! The Lord promised to deliver His people from these deceivers.
How can you tell if what you are hearing is false prophecy or truly a word from God? According to 1 John 4:1, we must “test the spirits to see whether they are from God.” Never blindly accept what you hear. Instead, be like the Bereans in Acts 17:11, who examined everything against the Scriptures. The Holy Spirit will lead you into truth. Guard yourself against false teaching, because many in our culture still say only what draws big crowds and tickles ears. Remember: the Word of God is your safeguard against deception.
Father, we thank You for exposing falsehood in our lives and in the mouths of false prophets and teachers. Give us discernment and wisdom whenever we hear someone speak on Your behalf. Keep us rooted in Your truth, we pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.
