Isaiah 21:6-7 (ESV): “6 For thus the Lord said to me: “Go, set a watchman; let him announce what he sees. 7 When he sees riders, horsemen in pairs, riders on donkeys, riders on camels, let him listen diligently, very diligently.”
There is a sense in which Jesus is calling all Christians to be watchmen on the wall. We can all see the signs of His Second Coming, and we are called to warn the world of the impending judgment. Don’t sleep on the job, Christian—go tell someone that Jesus has come and is coming.
Isaiah began to prophesy about the fall of Babylon. He stated that, had they paid attention, they would have seen the birth pangs (Isaiah 21:3). But they were arrogant and remained unaware until they heard the voice of the watchman saying, “Fallen, fallen is Babylon; and all the carved images of her gods He has shattered to the ground.” The Medo-Persians had snuck into Babylon at night through a riverbed, finding the city fast asleep after a festival.
Are you aware of the signs of the times? If you are a Christian, you ought to keep your finger on the eschatological pulse. You are a herald and a watchman. Your job is to share the Gospel while warning the people of this world about the judgment to come. That’s why you can’t afford to buy into this world’s system or live as if it will continue forever. Time is short! The Lord is coming soon. Don’t sleep on the job. Get on the wall and let the world know about Jesus. Amen?
Father, all praise, glory, and honor are due to You. You have made known to us our great need for Your Son and the signs of the coming judgment. Empower us to be heralds and watchmen. Put people in our path today with whom we can share both the Good News and the warning. We pray in Jesus’ name, amen.
