Jeremiah 1:5

Jeremiah 1:5 (ESV): ““Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations.”

George Whitefield once said, “God appoints His servants from before the foundation of the world, setting them apart for His glory.” To say God has a plan for your life is an understatement. He has a specific mission for each of us—one that only we can choose to live out.

Jeremiah prophesied from 627 BC to around 586 BC, after Jerusalem was destroyed by the Babylonians. He is known as the “Weeping Prophet” because of his deep lament over God’s message of judgment for a wayward nation. He was called and commissioned by God even before he was formed in his mother’s womb. Yet Jeremiah didn’t feel at all equipped for the call. He said, “Ah, Lord God! Behold, I do not know how to speak, for I am only a youth.” Thankfully, God reassured Jeremiah that He would speak through him. Though reluctant, Jeremiah stepped into his calling and fulfilled his mission faithfully.

Did you know that God knew you before you were formed in your mother’s womb too? That means He has a specific mission for you as well. Like Jeremiah, you might feel hesitant to step into your God-given calling—but just as He said to Jeremiah, He says to you: “I will do the work through you. Just be faithful to do and say what I tell you.” He has created you with a unique mission in mind, friend. Seek Him to understand what that mission is—and then live it out. Amen?

Father, thank You for knowing us from before the beginning of time. You have a specific mission for each of us. Help us to discover it and walk it out faithfully. We long to hear You say, “Well done, good and faithful servant.” Fill us with confidence and boldness even now, that You might be glorified through our lives. We pray this in Jesus’ name, Amen.
