Jeremiah 12:1-2 (ESV): “Righteous are you, O Lord, when I complain to you; yet I would plead my case before you. Why does the way of the wicked prosper? Why do all who are treacherous thrive? 2 You plant them, and they take root; they grow and produce fruit; you are near in their mouth and far from their heart.”
The inquisitiveness of man is no threat to God. He doesn’t mind us asking Him questions. What we must never do is allow our questions to become accusatory. He is good—always!
Jeremiah was a faithful servant of God, yet his path was filled with difficulty. He was being ridiculed and rejected by his own countrymen—some even wanted to kill him. He didn’t understand why God was allowing the wicked in his land to prosper while he was suffering. But notice what he didn’t do—he didn’t question God’s character. He begins his prayer, “Righteous are you, O Lord, when I complain to you; yet I would plead my case before you.” Even in his lack of understanding, Jeremiah doesn’t accuse God of wrongdoing.
In your suffering and difficulties, do you question God’s character? It’s fine to plead your case—as Jeremiah does. We just have to be careful not to let our pain lead us to doubt God’s goodness. He is our comfort and our rock—our sanctuary of peace in chaotic times. Press in and plead, but never put God’s character on trial. In the words of Job, “Though you slay me, I will hope in you” (Job 13:15). Amen?
Father, You are good, and we give You praise and honor for who You are. Forgive us for the times we’ve questioned You. You are nothing but kind and gracious to us. Help us trust You as we walk through trials. Keep us strong in faith, that we might be a powerful witness in our suffering—for Your glory we pray, in Jesus’ name, amen.
