Luke 5:31-32

Luke 5:31-32: “31 And Jesus answered them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. 32 I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance.””

The world contains two types of people: those who think they are righteous and those who know they are not. Unless you are the latter, you will never understand your desperate need for Jesus. He came to save sinners from the grip of sin and the judgment of Hell.

As Jesus was walking through Capernaum, He came across a tax collector named Levi sitting at his tax booth. Jesus simply said to him, “Follow Me.” Leaving everything behind, Levi arose and followed Him. To celebrate his newfound faith, Levi prepared a great feast and invited a large number of his tax collector friends. When the Pharisees and scribes saw Jesus eating and drinking with tax collectors and sinners, they became indignant and complained to His disciples. Jesus responded, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance.”

Which category best describes you? Those who think they are well or those who know they are sick? Jesus can only save those who recognize their need to be saved. The reality is that we all fit into that category. No one is righteous in and of themselves. We are made righteous through Jesus Christ and Him alone. And those who have been saved by Him are called to become like Him—reaching out to the broken, the rejected, and the sinner, because these are the very people He came to save. Never forget where Jesus found you, and never lose His heart for those who are still lost.

Father, what an amazing God You are, that You would stoop so low to save a sinner like me. Keep our hearts filled with Your love for sinners, that we might be Your hands and feet to those who desperately need You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
