Mark 10:10-12

Mark 10:10-12: “10 And in the house the disciples asked him again about this matter. 11 And he said to them, “Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her, 12 and if she divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery.””

Since its institution, marriage has often been viewed in a very casual way. This covenant is sacred and is not meant to be broken. It is one man and one woman for life!

After Jesus did many things in Galilee, He departed and came to Judea and beyond the Jordan. He was followed by the multitudes, and He taught them. A Pharisee asked Jesus if it was lawful to divorce. Jesus pointed him to the Law of Moses, which they considered a command to divorce. Jesus told them it was permitted because of the hardness of their hearts. Marriage was intended to be a covenant for life. Jesus went on to explain to His disciples that anyone who divorces outside of Biblical grounds and remarries commits adultery because God has not nullified the marriage.

What is your understanding of marriage? Do you consider it a casual covenant or a lifelong commitment? Since it is God who joins a man and a woman together, only God can nullify the covenant. Don’t go with the cultural flow as it relates to marriage. Commit yourself to the biblical concept and recognize that marriage is not given to us merely to make us happy, but to make us holy. God refines us through this covenant. Don’t just stay in your marriage—fight for it. It is God’s will for you to do so! Amen?

Father, change our hearts and help us stay the course in marriage. It is a journey full of ups and downs, but with You at the center, we can weather any storm. Strengthen us to remain committed until death do us part. We pray in Jesus’ name, amen.
