Mark 10:21-22

Mark 10:21-22:21 And Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, “You lack one thing: go, sell all that you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” 22 Disheartened by the saying, he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.”

Jesus Christ is the only One who can supply what we lack spiritually. We must look to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, to provide what we cannot produce within ourselves.

Jesus encountered a man who looked like he had the world by the tail. As it turned out, the world had him by the tail. He was rich, young, and held a position of influence. Yet he knew that he lacked eternal life. Although he appeared righteous outwardly, his wealth occupied the place in his heart that belonged to God. Jesus told him, “You lack one thing: go, sell all that you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” He had a choice to make between Christ and his idol. Tragically, he went away sorrowful because he chose his wealth over Jesus.

Is there anything holding you back from depending fully upon Christ? You may already be saved, but idolatry will hinder your fellowship with God and your obedience to Him. Jesus will not share the throne of our hearts with idols. He calls us to surrender anything that competes with our devotion to Him. If you feel spiritually empty, powerless, or distant from God today, ask Him to reveal any idols in your life. Then, by His grace, lay them down and give Jesus His rightful place.

Father, reveal what is in our hearts, we pray. Give us eyes to see any idols that are hindering our devotion to You and the strength to lay them down. You are far better and more worthy than anything this world can offer. Take Your rightful place in our lives. In Jesus’ name, amen.
