Matthew 13:54-56

Matthew 13:54-56 (ESV): 54 and coming to his hometown he taught them in their synagogue, so that they were astonished, and said, “Where did this man get this wisdom and these mighty works? 55 Is not this the carpenter’s son? Is not his mother called Mary? And are not his brothers James and Joseph and Simon and Judas? 56 And are not all his sisters with us? Where then did this man get all these things?””

Our identity is not found in earthly things, including the immediate family we are born into. It is found in our Creator alone. When you live out your true identity, the world marvels.

After Jesus spoke a series of parables, He went to His hometown of Nazareth. He confounded those He grew up around with His teaching in the synagogue and His mighty works before them. They immediately identified Jesus by His earthly family: “Isn’t this the carpenter’s son, and His mother Mary?” They couldn’t fathom such greatness coming from this family. They failed to see the true identity of Jesus: He is the Son of God! That puts things into perspective very quickly.

What is stopping you from fulfilling your destiny? You can blame your earthly heritage if you want, but the truth is you were created to represent the King of Kings. You are not defined by who your earthly parents are. You were fearfully and wonderfully made to reflect the glory of your God. Stop limiting yourself by your earthly circumstances and become who you were created to be in Christ! Amen?

Father, take my life and use it in extraordinary ways for Your glory and honor, I pray in Jesus’ name, amen.
