Matthew 26:52-54 (ESV): “52 Then Jesus said to him, “Put your sword back into its place. For all who take the sword will perish by the sword. 53 Do you think that I cannot appeal to my Father, and he will at once send me more than twelve legions of angels? 54 But how then should the Scriptures be fulfilled, that it must be so?””
The people of God should never be indifferent to evil. However, we must understand that God, in His sovereignty, sometimes permits evil for the purpose of accomplishing His redemptive plan and fulfilling His prophetic Word. Never fear—God wins in the end!
While in Gethsemane, Jesus sees a crowd of soldiers led by Judas Iscariot approaching Him. Jesus tells Judas to do what he has come to do, and with a kiss he betrays the Son of Man. As the soldiers seize Jesus, Peter takes out his sword and swings at Malchus, the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear. Jesus tells Peter to put his sword away and then heals Malchus. He reminds His disciples that all of these events must take place in order to fulfill the Scriptures.
How do you respond when evil appears to be winning in our world today? The answer is not violence. Yet neither should we become discouraged or indifferent. We must remain vigilant, walk with discernment, and faithfully bear witness to the truth. Even when it seems that evil is prevailing, God may be using those very events to accomplish His purposes and fulfill His prophetic Word. Our responsibility is to remain faithful, trust His sovereignty, and courageously stand for what is right.
Father, You have a prophetic Word to fulfill, and we are Your servants in this generation. Help us to walk faithfully in the balance of courage and trust. Give us wisdom to discern the times, strength to stand for truth, and grace to represent You well. We pray this in Jesus’ name, amen.
