Matthew 4:1 (ESV): “Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.”
The Holy Spirit will never tempt us, but He will lead us into places of testing. Don’t despise the wilderness—it is part of every Christian’s journey. It is there that what is truly inside of us is exposed. It is there that our weaknesses surface and our need for growth becomes undeniable. The wilderness is not punishment; it is preparation. Lean into it. Let God do His refining work in you.
After Jesus identified with us in baptism, He went on to identify with us in temptation. Not because He needed to grow—but to prove His holiness and absolute perfection. Although the Spirit led Jesus into the wilderness, He was not the source of the temptation. Satan is the agent of temptation, and three times he came at Christ with strategic attacks. Three times he failed. Jesus did not waver. He did not compromise. He did not sin.
So how are your wilderness moments going? Are you standing in victory, or are you repeatedly falling? The pathway to victory has already been shown to us. Jesus stood on the Word of God. During His temptations, He quoted Scripture. He wielded it like a sword. The Word cuts through deception. The Word exposes lies. The Word extinguishes the fiery darts of the enemy. Stop trying to fight spiritual battles with human strength. Take up the sword. Speak the Word. Stand firm. Refuse to bow. You have everything you need for victory in Christ. Walk in it. Take it. Stand your ground.
Father, thank You for providing a way of escape with every temptation we face. Your Word is powerful, living, and our true north. Strengthen us to stand firmly upon it. Bring Scripture to our minds in moments of weakness. Teach us to fight well and to honor You in every test. In Jesus’ name, amen.
