Matthew 5:4

Matthew 5:4 (ESV): “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.”

Not all mourning is the same. There is the mourning that comes from loss, pain, and hardship in this broken world. The mourning a Christian feels runs deeper than that. It is the sorrow of a heart that recognizes the weight of sin—our own and the sin that fills this fallen world.

The promise given by Jesus here is that those who mourn over their sin and the sin of the world shall be comforted. Not all mourning is the same.  He does not leave the brokenhearted in their grief. The very ones who mourn over their sin are the ones who run to Christ for mercy. And in Christ they find forgiveness, cleansing, and restoration. The comfort offered is a comfort of grace—the assurance that our sins are forgiven and our relationship with God has been restored.

Have you ever mourned over your sin before the Lord? Have you allowed the weight of it to bring you to repentance? The good news is that the comfort of Christ is greater than the sorrow of sin. When we come to Him with a broken and repentant heart, He meets us with mercy.   The world wants to ignore our depraved state while the Lord desire for us to face our sinfulness so we can be comforted.  Come to Him today and experience His forgiveness and assurance.  Amen?

Father, give us tender hearts that grieve over sin rather than ignore it. Help us to see our sin the way You see it, and lead us to true repentance. Thank You that in Christ there is forgiveness and comfort for every broken heart. In Jesus’ name, amen.
