Matthew 7:24;26 (ESV): “24 Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 26 And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand.”
The foundation of a home is what keeps it standing when storms arise. If you build on a solid foundation, you will weather the storm. If you build on a shifting foundation, you will not. The spiritual foundation upon which you build your life matters.
Jesus exhorts His disciples to be both hearers and doers of His Word. They must receive the truth and be willing to live it out. He likens the one who does so to a person who builds his house on the rock. He has a sure foundation, so when the trials of life come, he will not be shaken. A person who refuses to be a doer is like one who builds his house on the sand. When the storms come, his house will collapse. The Word is the foundation, and what we do with it determines how we weather the storms.
Are you a hearer and a doer of the Word? Have you made it your aim not just to study the Word of God, but to apply it to your life? So many Christians live powerless lives because they neither study nor apply the Word. Let that not be said of you. Be a hearer and a doer. Amen?
Father, we thank You that we have the opportunity to build on the rock. If our foundation is faulty, help us to strengthen it by hearing and doing Your Word. We pray this in Jesus’ name, amen.
