Numbers 22:31-32

Numbers 22:31–32 (ESV): “31 Then the Lord opened the eyes of Balaam, and he saw the angel of the Lord standing in the way, with his drawn sword in his hand. And he bowed down and fell on his face. 32 And the angel of the Lord said to him, “Why have you struck your donkey these three times? Behold, I have come out to oppose you because your way is perverse before me.”

God won’t bless our perversion. If you find your life full of obstacles, pray and ask the Lord to reveal why. If it is because you’re on the wrong road, repent and go the other way!

Balaam’s perversion was a love for money. He wanted the riches of the world at the expense of God’s perfect will. The Lord tried to reveal this error by way of his donkey. The angel of the Lord stood in opposition to him on the road and would have lopped his head off had his donkey not stopped on the path. Balaam couldn't see the opposition so he struck her three times. What a picture of being blinded to our sin. The angel of the Lord then told him, “If she had not turned aside from me, surely just now I would have killed you and let her live.”

What are you living for? Jesus said, “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also (Matt 6:21).” We relentlessly pursue the things that we find value in, even perversions. That is why we must “keep our hearts with all diligence (Prov 4:23).” Are you being driven by perversion? You can tell by paying attention to the obstacles on your road. Ask God to reveal any wickedness in your heart so you can repent and deal with it. It will save you much trouble.

Father, search our hearts and know us, see if there be any wicked way in us. We desire Your will. May we be souled out to You alone and not to the perversions of our hearts we pray in Jesus' name, amen.
