Proverbs 18:2 (ESV): “A fool takes no pleasure in understanding, but only in expressing his opinion.”
It was Mark Twain who once said, “It is better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than to open it and remove all doubt.” A fool expresses their opinion in the absence of facts. Don’t be a fool!
Solomon was the wisest man in the world, which means he knew when to speak and when to remain silent. In this passage, he instructs his sons on the importance of staying quiet in areas where they lack understanding. It’s okay to have opinions—but they must be rooted in understanding, not mere feelings. If only more people would take Solomon’s advice!
When controversial topics arise that you don’t fully understand, how do you respond? Do you share your opinion anyway, or choose to remain silent? Your answer to that question will shape how others perceive you. A fool speaks even when they lack understanding. It’s better to withhold your opinion and preserve your testimony than to speak foolishly. Consider that the next time you feel compelled to share your thoughts. Amen?
Father, we thank You for giving us wisdom in all things. Help us to be Christians who speak intelligently about Your Word. May we rightly apply it in our conversations, even if the world sees it as foolishness. Keep us silent when we ought not to speak. We pray this in Jesus’ name, amen.
