Proverbs 4:23 (ESV): “Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.”
The desires of our hearts dictate our steps in life. If our desires are evil, we will walk in evil. But if our desires are to do the will of God, we will walk in His ways. Our hearts determine our steps!
Solomon continues to instruct his son to listen carefully to his teachings. He urges him to pay attention to his words, incline his ear to his sayings, and not let them escape his sight but to keep them in his heart. For it is from the heart that all the decisions of life are made. Therefore, he must keep his heart—guarding it against wicked desires. He must do this with all vigilance, meaning he must take every necessary step to ensure his desires remain godly, lest he be found walking in wickedness.
Are you keeping your heart with all vigilance? Our Father has given us His Word to guide our steps. We must hide it in our hearts and never allow our desires to drift from His truth. That means we must examine our desires against His Word. If we find that our desires do not align with God’s, we must surrender to His will. He has given us all the wisdom we need and the power to walk in it by His Spirit. Our responsibility is to guard our hearts from evil.
Father, we thank You for speaking truth into our hearts. We pray that our desires would align with Yours. Please transform our hearts so that we walk in ways that please You. Help us to keep our hearts centered on You. We pray this in Jesus’ name, amen.
