Psalm 90:1–2 (ESV): “1 Lord, you have been our dwelling place in all generations.
2 Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever you had formed the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God.”
God has been God forever. There has never been a moment in eternity when He ceased to be God. He rules and reigns forevermore. Not only is He our God, but He is also our dwelling place. We belong with Him.
Moses likely wrote this prayer toward the end of his life. His brother and sister had died, and he had been forbidden from entering the Promised Land. Yet Moses doesn’t falter in his relationship with God, despite these circumstances. While he may have been disappointed in himself, he does not blame God. Instead, he acknowledges that God is almighty and eternal, and he recognizes that being in God’s presence is where he belongs.
Do you know where you belong, friend? It is not on some paradise island or in some grandiose place. You belong with Him, in His presence. He has been your God longer than you realize. Have you come to recognize this? From everlasting to everlasting, He is our God. Therefore, we ought not only to honor Him as such but also strive to live in His presence now. It is where we belong and where all believers in Jesus will ultimately live for eternity.
Father, we thank You for being our God and for making a way for us to dwell in Your presence. May we strive to live in it now until You call us home. We pray this in Jesus’ name, amen.
