1 Samuel 3:9 (ESV): “9 Therefore Eli said to Samuel, “Go, lie down, and if he calls you, you shall say, ‘Speak, Lord, for your servant hears.’ ” So Samuel went and lay down in his place.“
Jesus made it plain, “My sheep hear my voice.” Hearing the voice of God is an important aspect of our walk. Listen intently, for He is still speaking, and then do what He says!
As Samuel grew in age and stature, the Lord prepared him to be His prophet. When the time was right, the Lord revealed His plan to Samuel. One evening when he was lying down in the temple of the Lord, where the ark of God was, he heard a voice say, “Samuel.” He thought Eli was calling him so he came and said, “Here am I.” It wasn't Eli speaking. After three times, Eli realized this and told Samuel to say, “Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.” Samuel did and the Lord proclaimed that He was about to judge the house of Eli because his sons were walking in abominable ways. From that day forth God spoke prophetically through Samuel. He learned to hear God’s voice.
Have you learned to hear the voice of God? At first, it can seem as if it's just your thoughts. It might also be revealed as a strong desire within you. The Lord doesn’t often speak audibly but He could. The Good Shepherd will certainly train you to hear Him. He will put you around His neck so you can discern His voice. Present yourself for God this day and say, “Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.” He desires for you to know Him, and thus you can expect to hear His voice!
Father, we thank You for guiding us through this life. May our ears be tuned to Your voice. Speak, Lord, even now, for Your servant is listening, in Jesus' name, amen.
