Matthew 5:7

Matthew 5:7 (ESV): ““Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.

Mercy is one of the most beautiful and most misunderstood virtues in the Christian life. Many people think mercy is weakness—overlooking sin, ignoring justice, or simply being soft. But in Scripture, mercy is neither weakness nor indifference to truth. Mercy is love responding to misery.

The fifth Beatitude speaks directly to this mercy. The Greek word means “to care about others’ needs, to be sympathetic and compassionate.” It carries the idea of acting to relieve another person’s distress. God Himself is merciful, and He has given us His Son as the ultimate display of His mercy. The Cross is God’s mercy put on display. Thus, having received such great mercy from Him, we ought to be merciful to one another.

Are you lacking mercy today? It’s been said that a merciless heart is often the mark of someone who has forgotten how much they have been forgiven. When we lose sight of the cross, we become critical, impatient, and harsh with others. But when we remember the mercy God has shown us, it softens us toward the failures of others. One of the clearest evidences that Christ is transforming our hearts is that we begin to treat people with the same mercy God has shown us. Amen?

Lord, thank You for the mercy You have shown me through Your Son. Apart from Your grace, we would stand condemned before You. Yet You forgave and restored us in spite of ourselves. Help us to reflect that same mercy to others. We pray this in Jesus’ name, amen.
