Matthew 5:6

Matthew 5:6 (ESV): “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.”

Humanity is driven by the desires and longings of the heart. That is why it is so important to guard your heart, for those desires will direct your steps.

Jesus spoke to this crowd in His Sermon on the Mount with such clarity and conviction. He tells them that what they hunger and thirst for matters! To a culture that knew real physical hunger and thirst, this must have really hit home. They understood what it meant to be desperate for food and water. But Jesus was speaking of a continual craving for righteousness. He promises that those who keep hungering and thirsting for it shall be satisfied. It's a promise!

What is your heart presently longing for? Forgiveness? Wholeness? Worldly things? What you long for is what you live for.   Make Christ the desire of your heart.  We do this by communing with God, reading His Word, and seeking His will. These are the things that stoke the fire of longing in our hearts. And Jesus gives us a wonderful promise: if we continue to hunger and thirst for righteousness, we shall be satisfied.

Father, thank You for the truth of Your Word. Help us to guard our hearts and focus on the things that stir our desire for You and Your kingdom. Produce within us a deep hunger and thirst for righteousness, we pray in Jesus’ name, amen.
