2 Chronicles 10:7–8 (ESV): “7 And they said to him, “If you will be good to this people and please them and speak good words to them, then they will be your servants forever.” 8 But he abandoned the counsel that the old men gave him, and took counsel with the young men who had grown up with him and stood before him.”
Everyone takes counsel from someone. The source of your counsel will determine the steps you will take. That’s why it's important to choose your counselors wisely, lest you be led astray.
After Solomon died, his son Rehoboam took the throne of Israel. When Jeroboam, the son of Nabat, heard this, he returned to Israel from Egypt where he had been hiding from Solomon. While all of Israel was assembled in Shechem, Jeroboam asked Rehobaom to reduce the workload that his father had placed upon them. After seeking counsel from both the older and younger advisors, Rehoboam said, “My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add to it.” The kingdom of Israel would be divided into two, all because Rehoboam took the wrong counsel.
Who do you look to for counsel in life? If you are a Christian, your counselors should be godly people who uphold a biblical worldview. Looking for counsel from people who are struggling with the same issues in life as you are is dangerous. Look for godly people who have some life experience. Age shouldn't necessarily be the deciding factor, but older people generally have more life experience. Find good, godly older counselors to advise you. It will save you a lot of trouble.
Father, we thank You for giving us the Wonderful Counselor, who is the Spirit of God. Guide us to counselors who are being led by Him so we can avoid poor counsel we pray in Jesus' name, amen.
