Matthew 11:2-3 (ESV): “2 Now when John heard in prison about the deeds of the Christ, he sent word by his disciples 3 and said to him, “Are you the one who is to come, or shall we look for another?””
There is a huge difference between doubt and confirmation. It’s OK to ask God to confirm your faith. What we must not do is keep asking after He has already given us a reason to believe.
After John had been imprisoned by Herod Antipas for around a year, he sent his disciples to ask Jesus if He truly was the Messiah. The question becomes: was John needing confirmation, or were his disciples? Either way, what we know is that Jesus gave it by pointing them to the Messianic signs He performed. Jesus didn’t come as expected. Thus, He goes on to say, “And blessed is the one who is not offended by me.” In other words, trust in what you have observed, not in what you anticipated. The Messiah is confirmed!
How has your anticipation caused you to question the true identity of Jesus? It’s OK to ask, but it’s not OK to walk in doubt. The Lord will confirm His Messianic personhood, but He will not prove it to you on your terms. You must walk by faith in the evidence that has been provided. Let Him confirm what it is that you seek, but do not remain in doubt. He is everything He said He is. John knew it, his disciples knew it, and now you know it. Amen?
Father, thank You for confirming Your ways to us. May we walk by faith and not by expectation. We ask for confirmation when we need it, but protect us from slipping into doubt, we pray in Jesus’ name, amen.
