2 Kings 10:31

2 Kings 10:31 (ESV): “31 But Jehu was not careful to walk in the law of the Lord, the God of Israel, with all his heart. He did not turn from the sins of Jeroboam, which he made Israel to sin.”

Each of us has a pet sin that we think is less evil than the sins of our brothers.  However, God abhors all sin.  God help us to abhor all sin.

Jehu was instructed by God to put to death the house of Ahab because of their wickedness.  So he gathered the seventy sons of Ahab in Jezreel and executed them.  Jehu then returned to Israel and put to death all of the prophets of Baal.  He “demolished the pillar of Baal, and demolished the house of Baal, and made it a latrine to this day (vs 27).”   Although Jehu wiped out Baal from Israel, he did not remove the golden calves that were in Bethel and Dan, nor was he careful to walk in the law of God.

What sins do you abhor?  It's easy to look down on others who sin in those ways.  Let me ask you, what sins do you tolerate in your own life?  Do you not know God abhors them?  What hypocrisy we are prone to!  Perhaps if we saw our sin in the right way we would become more compassionate for those who are sinning in ways we abhor.   As the scripture says, “Get the log out of your own eye.”  Your sin is as bad as the other guys.  May we recognize this and respond with repentance for being self-righteous and hypocritical.

Father, we thank You for offering forgiveness to us through Your Son.  We ask that You help us to put sin in perspective.  Forgive us for judging others while we tolerate sin in our own lives.  Change our ways we pray in Jesus' name, amen.
