21 Days of Prayer and Fasting - Day 16

DAY 16 – NATIONAL

REPENTANCE

“ 2 “Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and call out against it, for their evil has come up before me.”

– Jonah 1:2 –

Repentance is an important part of any Christian’s life. It is also a very important part of our nation’s heritage. The second President of the United States, John Adams, called for a national day of repentance, prayer and fasting. He said, “I have therefore thought fit to recommend, and I do hereby recommend, that Wednesday, the 9th day of May next, be observed throughout the United States as a day of solemn humiliation, fasting, and prayer; that the citizens of these States, abstaining on that day from their customary worldly occupations, offer their devout addresses to the Father of Mercies agreeably to those forms or methods which they have severally adopted as the most suitable and becoming; that all religious congregations do, with the deepest humility, acknowledge before God the manifold sins and transgressions with which we are justly chargeable as individuals and as a nation, beseeching Him at the same time, of His infinite grace, through the Redeemer of the World, freely to remit all our offenses, and to incline us by His Holy Spirit to that sincere repentance and reformation which may afford

us reason to hope for his inestimable favor and heavenly benediction.”

We are in desperate need of keeping this day! Pray for our nation to repent of our self-sufficiency, lust, pride, idolatry, pluralism, entitlement, greed, and marginalization of the truth that we might be washed clean, and that the Gospel goes forward and prevails.

“My heart aches for America and its deceived people. The wonderful news is that our Lord is a God of mercy, and He responds to repentance. In Jonah’s day, Nineveh was the lone world superpower—wealthy, unconcerned, and self-centered. When the Prophet Jonah finally traveled to Nineveh and proclaimed God’s warning, people heard and repented. I believe the same thing can happen once again, this time in our nation.”

– Billy Graham –
