Daniel 4:37

Daniel 4:37 (ESV): “Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and extol and honor the King of heaven, for all his works are right and his ways are just; and those who walk in pride he is able to humble.”

Pride is a trap that not only lies to you but also leads to your downfall. As Scripture says, “Before destruction a man’s heart is haughty, but humility comes before honor (Prov 18:12).”

After God revealed Himself to Nebuchadnezzar a second time in the fiery furnace, the king still had not fully humbled himself. He made a decree that no one should speak against Yahweh—the God who delivers from the fire—but his heart remained proud. So God gave him a dream prophesying that he would be given the mind of a beast for seven years in order to humble his haughty heart. Just as God declared, the king lived in the fields of his kingdom like an animal. But when the seven years were over, he finally humbled himself and praised the Lord. Nebuchadnezzar had finally gotten the point.

Has God ever had to humble you before? He will not contend with the proud forever—He will act to humble them. Sadly, many people, no matter what they experience, will never bow their knee to King Jesus. Their pride blinds them to their great need for Him. Don’t let that be your story. Recognize the lesson God is teaching you and humble yourself—lest He has to do it for you again and again. Amen?

Father, You alone are worthy of our worship and allegiance. Help us to keep our hearts humble. May we be found worshiping You and You alone. We pray in Jesus’ name, amen.
