Esther 4:14 (ESV): “For if you keep silent at this time, relief and deliverance will rise for the Jews from another place, but you and your father’s house will perish. And who knows whether you have not come to the kingdom for such a time as this?”
Dietrich Bonhoeffer once said, “Silence in the face of evil is itself evil: God will not hold us guiltless. Not to speak is to speak. Not to act is to act.”
After Haman was appointed as chief official, he required everyone to bow down and pay him homage. Mordecai refused, and in response, Haman sought to destroy all the Jews. When Mordecai learned of Haman’s plan, he sent a message to Queen Esther, urging her to go before the king and speak on behalf of her people. However, it was unlawful for her to enter the king’s court without being summoned. Though this act could cost Esther her life, she courageously agreed to speak up against Haman’s evil plot. When she went before the king, she found favor with him.
How do you respond to the evil that is revealed to you? Do you stay silent and shrink back, or do you speak up no matter the cost? God is calling us to be watchmen, friends. We are not only to abhor evil but also to bring awareness to it. Do not remain silent when God reveals evil to you. If you refuse, God may raise up someone else to expose the darkness, but what a loss it would be for Him not to use you as His first choice.
These are dark times. The world is calling evil good and good evil. Do not stay silent, as much of the church did during the Holocaust. Speak up, and allow God to use you to save the lives of those who cannot speak for themselves. Amen?
Father, we thank You for calling us to be Your voice in this culture. Help us not to cower in the face of evil but to speak courageously against it. Yours is the kingdom and the glory forever and ever. We pray in Jesus’ name, amen.
