Habakkuk 2:18-20 (ESV): “18 “What profit is an idol when its maker has shaped it, a metal image, a teacher of lies? For its maker trusts in his own creation when he makes speechless idols! 19 Woe to him who says to a wooden thing, Awake; to a silent stone, Arise! Can this teach? Behold, it is overlaid with gold and silver, and there is no breath at all in it. 20 But the Lord is in his holy temple; let all the earth keep silence before him.”
How easy it is to place our trust in something tangible, yet utterly incapable of helping us in our time of need. Trust in God—and God alone.
The Lord addresses the idolatrous hearts of those in Babylon as He continues to unveil His plan to use them to accomplish His purposes and then judge them for their wickedness. Yet Judah was not exempt from this lesson, for they too had chased after idols. The warning, therefore, applied to both. The Lord reminds His people of the futility and wickedness of placing their trust in man-made gods.
Who—or what—are you trusting in? Have you fashioned a god in your own image? Has another person become your source of comfort or peace? Rid your life of every idol. Put people and possessions in their proper place, and keep God on the throne of your heart. Only He belongs there, and only He can truly help you in your time of need. Amen?
Father, how easy it is for us to give our hearts to something other than You. Give us eyes to see, Lord, that You alone are our hope and our rescue. Take the throne of our hearts as Your rightful place, we pray, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
