Isaiah 30:20-21 (ESV): “20 And though the Lord give you the bread of adversity and the water of affliction, yet your Teacher will not hide himself anymore, but your eyes shall see your Teacher. 21 And your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, “This is the way, walk in it…”
God-given adversity and affliction are evidence of His love and grace in our lives. These trials are meant to teach us the way we are to walk. He is gracious to restore us when we surrender to Him.
God proclaimed to Judah that they must not look to Egypt as an escape from the Assyrians. Doing so would only lead them into deeper trouble, for their trial was a chastisement from God. Their suffering was the result of their rebellion. Yet Isaiah reminds them of God’s grace and mercy—if the nation cries out to Him, He will hear and come to their rescue. But not on their terms. Only when they have truly humbled themselves to His will and ways will He show them how to walk again.
Are you walking in God’s ways or your own? If it’s the latter, expect to experience some adversity and affliction. God will humble you—but only because He loves you. He knows what’s best for your life, so the wisest thing you can do is surrender to Him and wait on His instruction as you go about your daily life. If you’re lacking guidance today, pray and wait. Don’t act prematurely. If you’re in rebellion, repent and return to His will and ways. His way is far better! Amen?
Father, we thank You that You don’t let us stray too far without bringing some adversity and affliction into our lives. You know our hearts, so do whatever is necessary to keep us close to You. Your ways are better. We pray this in Jesus’ name, amen.
