Jeremiah 17:7-8 (ESV): “7 “Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose trust is the Lord. 8 He is like a tree planted by water, that sends out its roots by the stream, and does not fear when heat comes, for its leaves remain green, and is not anxious in the year of drought, for it does not cease to bear fruit.”
Learning to trust God is perhaps the most important lesson we can learn.
Who else can help you through this life? There isn’t a single thing or person that can meet you like He can. He is in control. So stop looking elsewhere, and get your eyes on Him.
The Lord spoke to Jeremiah about the misplaced trust of Judah. They were trusting in self, man, and idols to save them. The Lord likened this to a shrub planted in the desert during a drought—it has no hope of finding the help it needs. In contrast, the Lord says that if you trust in Him, you will be like a tree planted by water. It must reach out its roots to the water—it cannot be passive in trusting—but it will have no fear when the heat comes or when drought arrives. It will always bear fruit.
When it comes to trust, are you a shrub in the desert during a drought, or a tree planted by streams of water? If you are trusting in anything other than God, then you are the former. Only those who trust in God can be assured of continual fruitfulness. It won’t matter if a drought comes, because the Lord will provide what you need to stay healthy and sustained. Stop looking to something or someone else to be your help—and look to God. He is in control, and He will certainly meet you where you are. Amen?
Father, we praise You for being our reliable source in whom we can trust. You are exactly what we need, no matter what we face. May we not look to another. We pray this in Jesus’ name, amen.
