Mark 8:32-33

Mark 8:32-33: “32 And he said this plainly. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. 33 But turning and seeing his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, “Get behind me, Satan! For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.””

Rebuking Jesus is never a good idea. Not only is it wrong, but it is also terribly irreverent. No one who has a clear understanding of who Jesus is would do such a thing…or would they?

After Peter declared that Jesus is the Christ, the Lord began teaching His disciples that He “must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes and be killed, and after three days rise again” (vs 31). Peter wasn’t having it. He took Jesus aside and began to rebuke Him. Jesus then turned and rebuked Peter, saying, “Get behind me, Satan!” Peter had unknowingly embraced the same mindset Satan desired—a crossless Messiah. Jesus exposed the problem: “For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.”

Have you ever been there? You don’t understand what God is doing, and instead of patiently trusting Him, you resist His plan, question His wisdom, or even argue with Him. How foolish that is! The issue is never God; it is our mindset. When we are consumed with human reasoning instead of God’s purposes, we begin to think like Peter rather than like Christ. True rest comes when we stop insisting that we know best and instead trust that God’s ways are higher than ours. As Isaiah reminds us, “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the LORD” (Isa 55:8). Surrender your thinking to Him, and you will find yourself trusting Jesus instead of resisting Him.

Father, forgive us for being so arrogant at times that we actually think we know better than You. Teach us to trust Your wisdom even when we cannot understand Your ways. We humbly surrender ourselves to You today, knowing that Your plans are always better than ours. We pray this in Jesus’ name, amen.
