Job 13:9–10 (ESV): “Will it be well with you when he searches you out? Or can you deceive him, as one deceives a man? He will surely rebuke you if in secret you show partiality.”
It’s a dangerous thing to consider yourself the judge of another man’s misfortune. It is better to say nothing than to speak on God’s behalf and be wrong. Leave the judging to God!
As Job was suffering, his friends began to offer suggestions as to why he was enduring such severe trials. In an effort to be helpful, they offered their opinions. They told him he must have some secret sin in his life, for God does not allow such things to happen to the upright. However, Job disagreed with their judgment and reminded them that they too were full of faults. Job’s plea was for them to consider their own hearts before judging his.
How do you respond to a brother or sister who is suffering? Do you attempt to point out their faults as the source of their misfortune? Be very careful about what you say on God’s behalf, lest you falsely condemn a brother or sister. They don’t need your speculation. If God hasn’t given you a word about why the trial is happening, you shouldn’t attempt to speak on His behalf. You have the right to remain silent in such situations—so do so! It’s better for you and for the one who is suffering. Amen?
Father, we thank You for being so gracious to us. Help us to tread cautiously when advising a suffering saint. Protect us from misrepresenting You, we pray in Jesus’ name, amen.
