Joshua 9:14–15 (ESV): “14 So the men took some of their provisions, but did not ask counsel from the Lord. 15 And Joshua made peace with them and made a covenant with them, to let them live, and the leaders of the congregation swore to them.”
The consequence of making decisions without seeking God can be life-long. We must seek the Lord before we act, lest we are deceived by our own emotions or by others. Pray first, then act.
After hearing about the defeat of Jericho and Ai, the Gibeonites were greatly afraid. They sent representatives to act as though they were from a land far away. They asked the leaders of Israel to make a covenant with them, to not harm them, which they did without seeking God. Then it was revealed that they were neighboring people that lived within the Promised Land. Joshua honored the covenant and allowed them to live but made them servants for the congregation and the altar of the Lord.
Do you act before you pray? There are times when a decision has to be made immediately, and that is why we should pray without ceasing. However, we should never act without seeking the Lord. He has the plan that we are to follow. Be quick to ask God for counsel and wait for His reply. Make this your standard operating procedure all the days of your life. Amen?
Father, we thank You for being involved in our daily lives. You care about every detail. Remind us often to seek You before acting. Our lives are Yours’ so guide us to Your will we pray in Jesus' name, amen.
