Luke 2:10-12

Luke 2:10-12: “10 And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. 11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. 12 And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.””

Why shepherds? They were common, ordinary men, and yet God gave them an extraordinary privilege. They were among the first to hear that Jesus had been born! Right from the beginning, God was showing us who Jesus came for. He didn’t come only for the powerful, wealthy, or important. He came for ordinary people like you and me.

Caesar Augustus issued a decree that required Joseph to travel to Bethlehem because he was from the house and lineage of David. While they were there, Jesus was born just as God had promised. That night, an angel appeared—not to kings or religious leaders—but to shepherds watching their flocks. The angel announced, “For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.” Think about those words: unto you. Jesus was born for people like them.

Aren’t you glad Jesus didn’t come only for the elite? The announcement to the shepherds reminds us that the Gospel is good news for everyone. Jesus came for those who recognize their need, their spiritual poverty, and their inability to save themselves. Praise God, Jesus came for people just like you and me!

Father, thank You for sending Your Son for people like us. Without Jesus we would be spiritually destitute. Help us never forget that Christ came to save the lost, and give us a heart to share Him with those the world may overlook. In Jesus’ name, amen.
