Mark 1:45

Mark 1:45 (ESV): “But he went out and began to talk freely about it, and to spread the news, so that Jesus could no longer openly enter •a town, but was out in desolate places, and people were coming to him from every quarter.”

Disobedience always carries consequences beyond what the human eye can see. Sometimes those consequences affect the opportunities Jesus gives us to serve Him and minister to others.

As Jesus traveled throughout Galilee, He taught with authority, healed many diseases, and cast out demons. One particularly notable miracle was the cleansing of a leper. This man came to Jesus in faith, kneeling before Him and imploring Him to make him clean. Jesus graciously did so, then sternly instructed him to present himself to the priest and to tell no one how he had been healed. Instead, the man disobeyed and spread the news everywhere. As a result, Jesus could no longer openly enter the towns but remained in desolate places while people came to Him from every direction.

Have you ever considered that your disobedience can create obstacles to Christ’s work in the lives of others? We see this whenever a pastor falls into sin or a once-trusted mentor abandons the faith. Such failures damage the witness of Christ and become stumbling blocks for those watching. Our sin cannot thwart God’s sovereign purposes, but it can diminish our usefulness and make ministry more difficult. Therefore, let us walk in humble obedience so that our lives point others to Christ rather than distract them from Him.

Father, forgive us for walking in disobedience. Keep our hearts humble and obedient so that we never become a stumbling block to others, but instead serve as faithful instruments through whom Christ is glorified. We ask this in Jesus’ name, amen.
