Mark 3:1-2

Mark 3:1-2 (ESV): “Again he entered the synagogue, and a man was there with a withered hand. 2 And they watched Jesus, to see whether he would heal him on the Sabbath, so that they might accuse him.”

Kennedy Gordy, the son of Motown founder Barry Gordy, made his music debut under the stage name Rockwell with the hit song, Somebody’s Watching Me. Ironically, the song was reportedly inspired, in part, by a noisy neighbor who made Rockwell feel like he was constantly being watched.

Jesus certainly knew what it felt like to be watched. Everywhere He went, people had their eyes on Him—some in amazement, others with hostile scrutiny.

On one particular Sabbath, while Jesus was in the synagogue, He noticed a man with a withered hand. The Pharisees watched closely to see whether He would heal the man, hoping to accuse Him of violating their legalistic interpretation of the Sabbath. Jesus paid no attention to their man-made traditions. Instead, He healed the man, demonstrating that doing good on the Sabbath was not only lawful but perfectly consistent with God’s heart (Mark 3:1–6).

The reality is that somebody is always watching you, Christian. That is why we must be mindful of how we live. We are not called to please people by living up to their expectations, but we are called to faithfully represent Christ. The people around you may never read a Bible, but they will read your life. By the power of the Holy Spirit, strive to live above reproach so that even those who criticize you will have little to accuse. Let your life point others to Jesus. Amen?

Father, use my life to reflect the character of Your Son and bring glory to Your name. Help me to walk in a manner worthy of the gospel so that others may see Christ in me. I pray this in Jesus’ name, amen.
