Matthew 12:31-32 (ESV): “31 Therefore I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven people, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. 32 And whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come.”
The Holy Spirit is responsible for leading mankind into all truth. He reveals our sin and brings us to our Redeemer, Jesus. When a person rejects Jesus, they are blaspheming the Holy Spirit. It is the only sin that cannot be forgiven.
After Jesus performed many miracles and cast out demons, the Pharisees accused Him of being empowered by Satan. Jesus said a kingdom cannot be divided; therefore, Satan cannot cast out Satan. He went on to say that it was by the Spirit that He did these things. Then He stated that all sins can be forgiven except the rejection of the Spirit’s drawing people to Jesus. He was warning the Pharisees that they were in danger of committing the unpardonable sin.
Are you in danger of committing the unpardonable sin? If you are rejecting the Gospel, then you are! The only sin that cannot be atoned for is the sin of unbelief in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. Every other sin can be forgiven by the blood of Jesus. The Holy Spirit draws you to the Father by way of the Son (John 6:44). Don’t harden your heart, but believe! That is how you avoid committing the unpardonable sin. Amen?
Father, draw the heart of every person by Your Spirit to see their need for Jesus. Give the doubter faith to see the great thing You have done by sending Your Son. Save to the uttermost, we pray, in Jesus’ name, amen.
